Upgrade advice

Postby Prybutok » Sun Sep 26, 2010 7:26 pm

The world of video card nomenclature confuses me. It's hard to determine what is better than what for the money so I'm asking for your advice.

My 8800 GT is crapping out and I need to replace it. What would be my best or at least obvious upgrade choices? I can spend about $100.

Thanks in advance.

At $100, you're looking at either an Nvidia GTS 250 ( Newegg link ) or a Radeon 4850 ( Newegg link ).

This is one of those cases where you are really on the dollar edge of a major upgrade though - for a few bucks more you could look at a Radeon 5750 ( link ) or a GTS 450 (link ). Both are substantially better cards than the previous. At this particular price point, even though I like Nvidia's drivers a lot more, the ATI is better hardware IMO.

Thanks for the advice Rich. $100 wasn't my limit just a rough number. I'll take a look at the 5750 and GT 450 and pick one.
