Pirates of Sealand

Postby Monox » Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:36 am

http://www.buysealand.com - The people from The Pirate Bay are looking to buy this so called micronation. It seems this place has its own currency, stamps, I even managed to find a copy of a marriage certificate. At the buysealand website they are taking donations and offering citizenship to those who donate. In reality Sealand is a platform (formerly used as a helicopter landing site) 6 miles off the coast of the UK and could house maybe 10 people. I guess they are looking to buy it and set up their servers there so they can pretty much host whatever they want without facing legal action. The problem is this was tried before, back in 2000 by some other company and they had to close shop when they realized it just wasn't possible. US and German courts have ruled that Sealand has no legal status. Technically it is still under jurisdiction of the UK.

Just thought i'd share this with those who haven't heard about it yet. It made me smile, but the chances of it coming to fruition are probably slim to none. More about Sealand:

I remember reading about both Sealand and the attempted offshore data haven. I didn't know they had to abandon the project. That kinda sucks.

Honestly, the story would make a good movie or at least the basis for a good movie.
