I like Firefly. I am a Whedon Fan boy (Angel and Buffy). Serenity dissapointed me as it snuffed my favourite sub plot, being Bishop or I think his name was.
Firefly is an awesome concept, though the minor detais sin BSG blows it away. The props department need a massive injection of funds.
The temperement of some scenes feels like it is being directed by a distracted 12 year old who is too impatient because he wants to go make out. Whilst other scenes are completely enthralling. Joss can capture images that other directors would not imagine, his style of shooting out of the box is his second best asset (he is an amazing writer) and also his worse down fall.
Just like Buffy and Angel, the best episodes is when he moves away from the mainstream formula and blindsides expectations. The two Episodes that spring to mind are the fireball episode when Serenity loses power, and the Bounty HUnter episode.
BSG has its down falls too, and unfortunately Firefly was cancelled before it could bloom. It feels that the majority of episodes Joss was caged by the Network to produce mainstream money maker, where it definately required to gain a niche market, which would eventually led to mainstream acceptance...
Just a few thoughts...
