Have an old video card lying around; know someone who does?

Postby Phace » Mon Feb 02, 2009 1:21 am

Hi! I'm looking to upgrade an old rig and wanted to slap a new GPU into it. The MB is rather old, so it only supports PCI and AGP cards, but not PCIe. The best card it will handle is a nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra AGP 256MB.

Anyone have one of these around? It used to be a solid card back in the day, but I'm having trouble finding one on the interwebz for a reasonable price considering the rarity of the AGP unit. Please PM me or respond in this thread if you have any info.

Thanks! :D

Not usually my recommendation, but ATI supported AGP better (in terms of how long) and with a higher variety of cards than Nvidia did, so you can find some interesting performers among their line up - for instance

which should pretty easily out perform a 6800.

Nvidia stopped with the 7900GS I think, but it's really hard to find those cards, they didn't make many.

I used an Nvidia AGP 7600 for a long time until I upgraded last year and it was really, really good!
My friend in Australia really wants to get a new boomerang, but he just can't seem to throw the old one away.

I think the catch with the board is that it only supports AGP cards at 1.5V. Here's a link to the instillation manual for it: Soyo KT600 Dragon Plus v2.0

I'll check out the nVidia 7 series for voltage and some of the ATI cards as well. I assumed it wouldn't even handle the nVidia 7 series from based off of Soyo's compatibility chart.

I guess I should just look through some old PCI cards and search for any AGP cards that run at 1.5V.

Thanks for the info :D

Edit:
Found 3 512MB cards that might work. Would appreciate any feedback you all could offer. I think they'll work with the Soyo board since they are PCI or AGP respectively. Also with a 550W PSU in the old rig I'm anticipating it can handle the load. Thanks again!

(I need to confirm that this last one runs on 1.5v, but from the way it looks I think it does. Directron.com)

Edit 2: Chatted with Rd and Rem last night in vent and they got me straightened out with this. Thanks again to all, and thanks especially to Rd and Rem for your help!
