I've never understood the hype around Bioshock. I played the first game and it was pretty but every level looked the same and you fought the exact same bad guys the entire time you were playing. I got kinda bored half way through. Not a bad game but it's no Half Life for sure.

That said, I was impressed with Jason's career change from murdering fornicating teens to wood sculpting.

Bioshock is what I consider to be the first truly "Next Generation" console game... graphically at least. As for the game itself... well... I'd already played Bioshock. It was called System Shock 2, and it was a better game.

The creative aspect of the game was in my opinion astounding. The concept of Rapture as a failed art deco utopia along with its actual realization in the game are really second to none. The gameplay was typical fps, as long as the controls function properly (which they did), I'm not sure what uniqueness one expects out of that genre.

I have yet to play a FPS that was more fun and immersive than the first Half Life.

I'm not saying I expect every game in a given genre to be ground-breaking and innovative. But there's a difference between making a new game with new ideas and new mechanics, and taking a game you've already made (Bioshock is the same people that made system shock) and basically re-doing it by only changing the graphics and the plot.

Yahtzee sums it up better than I can, really:

I've always wanted to play System Shock 2 but could never get a hold of a copy.

Yeah... I'm surprised Irrational hasn't put it on Steam or something. Direct2Drive has both Bioshocks, but neither System Shock. I wonder if it's because 2K doesn't have the rights to it or something... hrm.

Oddly enough, when you search for "System Shock" on Direct2Drive.com, it asks "Did you mean 'mystery slick'?". Uhhhh... no... not really.
